| IDEA FOR A WALK "AROUND THE TOWERS OF CHIGNIN"
Starting from the Route National 6 between St. Jeoire-Prieuré and Montmélian a little before you reach the station of Chignin, turn left on to the D21E which leads to the main part of Chignin. When you reach an intersection with a stone wayside cross, turn left and go towards the church. Park in the car park located on the left alongside the church wall. ITINERARY: Take the D21E signed Curienne, past the presbytery of the church then leave the D21E which turns left, and continue straight on. After 100 m you ignore the road on you right which leads to Chignin but you turn right after a further 20m. This road leads to Viviers. Pass through the hamlet and find the road that leaves Viviers towards the left at the foot of the hill. On reaching Montlevin re-join the D21E for 20m when you will find a turning to the left between the houses. This quickly becomes a path. This will pass through the meadows and bring you to the foot of Mont Ronjou. Climb and take a right turn. Ignore the turn to the left, as this makes a loop and shortly returns to the road. Carry on along the high ground where the view is stunning. You can see the first towers. You will quickly find a pathway to the right, in a meadow, which will lead in 2 mins to the way to the summit of Mont Ronjou. Then return to the intersection. Take the path which begins in front of you and is bordered by vines. Keep to this path, which descends to the hamlet of Villard at the foot of the towers. In the hamlet you will find a road, follow it. When you come to an intersection opposite a wine press, turn right. After about 80m take the left turn (between a bread oven and a cross). This will become a path and you stay on this. You will see the towers on your right. On reaching a statue of the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of the Fields and the Vines) rejoin the road. Leaving on your right hand the direction of the Clos Saint Anthelme (where you will see a crenelated tower), take a left turn and you will return to the church. |
